Women’s Health Q&A

What is women’s health care?

Women’s health care helps women who are experiencing problems related to the female reproductive system. The organs in this system include the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva.

Breast care is also included in women’s health care. Having screening mammograms helps detect any lumps or tissue changes early on.

Women’s health care covers areas like menstruation, menopause, and sexual health. Problems that are a particular problem in women also come under women’s health, such as female incontinence or recurrent urinary tract infections.

You can also get nutrition advice from Dr. Bubis, so you know you’re eating a nutritious diet that promotes good health.

What is a well-woman exam?

One of the main ways to look after your feminine health is with a well-woman exam. At this annual visit, you see Dr. Bubis for a consultation about your general health, but with a focus on your reproductive health. The well-woman exam includes a pelvic exam, manual breast exam, and screening tests, like a urine check and a Pap smear to check for signs of cervical cancer.

Having a Pap smear only takes a few minutes, as Dr. Bubis collects a sample of cells from your cervix for testing. Most of the time, Pap smear results show no signs of cancer. Even if there are changes in the cells, that doesn’t mean you have cancer. In cases where a Pap smear does identify early-stage cancer cells, you can get treatment early, giving you a far greater chance of a successful outcome.

What kinds of conditions does women’s health cover?

There are potentially many conditions that come under women’s health. For instance, many women experience problems with menstruation, like cramps or heavy bleeding.

Other women’s health conditions include:

  • Yeast infections
  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Pelvic organ prolapse

Perimenopause and menopause can cause uncomfortable symptoms and problems, such as vaginal dryness, hot flashes, and thinning hair, that affect a woman’s quality of life. Dr. Bubis can help reduce or relieve these hormonal imbalances with hormone replacement therapy and other treatments.
